Personal Statement

I would be posting my academic essays from time to time just to see how people would react as they read my terrible writings. This is your Asian kind of personal statement. We weren't really taught of the "how-tos". Ugh, to think that I'd have to take IELTS too is a pain in the ass.

Proof read by some English nazis. There's an another proof read version by Adrian in the email but my self esteem stopped me from reading them.

Following my father, whom is a banker around from when I was just a toddler, I have always felt a sense of wonder being in banks. The hustle and bustle of people inside and outside of the institution, gave me an insight on how lively it is working in a bank. This is what attracts me to accounting and finance at the beginning. The technical nature and complexity of accounting is like unravelling a puzzle piece that never seems to end. Knowing how industries would not be incorporated without accounting gives accountants the upper hand as they hold the necessary information and records for the relevant users to make decisions. Because of this, it is no surprise that I am pursuing a degree in Accounting.

Though I digest numbers like how I munch Oreo biscuits, books are fortunately an integral part of my life. Every year my parents allocated a certain amount of money to purchase books we had wanted then. I started saving money in primary school, knowing that at the end of the year there would be great bargains for books and by the time the sale commenced, I would have enough funds to buy books on my own. I was fascinated how monies are important when I was introduced to Principles of Accounting in high school. The subject made me realise how little I know about accounting and it drove me to participate in Taylor’s University Accounting Competition. Despite me not winning, it was an eye opener as we were pressed for time in preparing sets of accounts. It gave me a small glimpse on how it would be like working in an accounting firm with pressure dawning behind us. All those further allured me to pursue a career in accounting.

I have read a lot of biographies but I favour Tan Sri Tony Fernandes’ the most. As an Accounting degree holder, he showed me how you could contribute to society with the power of knowledge in your hands. I had the pleasure to meet him once and I was awed by his presence and charisma as an individual. Seeing how he managed a failing airline into an established budget airline in the world got me thinking on how amazing it is to be successful and to have the ability to share success with other people. Because of that, I have participated in volunteer work arranged by my college. It aims to teach young children on how fun mathematics could be in camps using learning aids such as flash cards and graphic art by using the computer. It may not be much but nevertheless, this experience has taught me a valuable lesson in life. The smallest form of assistance goes a long way when performed with good intentions.

In my college years, I have joined several societies such as the Debating Club and the Law Society. These two clubs taught me how to be calm, passionate and rational at all situations.  It may seem trivial but I believe that soft skills will help in my preparation to enter the workforce in the future. I do not doubt that in the path of accountancy, there will be pressure and complex tribulations. Fortunately, Financial Accounting has always been my cup of tea and I was rewarded when I received the Dean’s List Award from my 1st till 4th semester in Diploma of Accountancy. Outside of class, I am an active member of the tennis club and had participated in several intercollegiate sports. Besides that, I have also worked part time as a media officer assistant in Sepang International Circuit for several races such as MotoGP and F1 Grand Prix. The working environment taught me how important communication is between persons and interactions with foreigners gave me a new perspective in human relationships. I am interested to discover other cultures and individuals from all walks of life and indeed, studying abroad provides the perfect setting for me to venture outside my comfort zone.

I have always envisioned my academic journey in college to be a unique and interesting experience. I hope by acquiring this degree from your university, I would be able to explore the opportunities laid out and perform well in my education. The university would definitely serve as an excellent foundation for me to be a qualified accountant and a good individual in the society.
